Poker tips: position, folds, odds and a hard stop

A poker tip is a default that survives contact with a real table. It is not a lucky shirt and it is not “always go all-in on Mondays”. This poker page is for adults 18+. It will repeat ideas from how to play poker and poker for beginners because those defaults are the ones people skip.

If a tip promises you will win, throw it out. How to win at poker already refused that promise. Tips reduce unforced errors. They do not delete variance or rake.

Tips versus content

A clip of a hero call is entertainment. A tip is something you can do on the next orbit without a narrator. If you cannot write the tip in one sentence and obey it when you are losing, it was never a tip. It was a story you liked. The six-row table below is deliberately unglamorous. That is the filter. If you need a seventh row, make it “stop when the note says stop”. That row already exists. People skip it.

One table. That is the list.

None of these is GTO. GTO poker strategy is a later vocabulary. If you cannot follow the table above, a solver screenshot will not save you.

Print the table or do not. Either way, pick one row to obey tonight. Six rows at once is how people obey none. Tomorrow, add a second row. That is how tips become habits. A habit you skip when you are losing was never installed. Install it on a winning orbit first, when it is easy, so it is there when it is not.

You do not need to say “range” to use the idea. A range is the set of hands you would play the same way from this seat. From under the gun that set should be small. From the button it can be larger because you will act last.

Practical version

If you are first to act, ask: “Would I be happy playing this hand if someone three-bets?” If no, fold. If you are on the button and everyone folded, you may open hands you would never open up front.

Do not copy a streamer’s opens

They may be balanced, or they may be entertaining. Your night-one job is not content. It is not donating the blinds plus a call with 94s because a clip did it.

Blind defence is not loyalty

You posted the big blind. That does not mean you must see a flop with 93o because “I already paid”. The blind is gone. The raise is a new price. Defend some hands against a button steal — suited connectors, decent kings, pairs — and give up the rest. Defending every blind is how beginners turn a forced bet into a stack. The tip is: defend a list, not an emotion.

The small blind is worse. You will be out of position for three streets. Completing with junk to “keep them honest” is a donation with extra steps. Raise or fold is a cleaner beginner default from that seat. You will fold a lot. That is the tip working.

This is the only numeric example on this page.

Pot is $40 after the opponent bets. You face $10 to call. You have a flush draw on the turn (nine outs, one card to come). Rough chance to hit ≈ 9/46 ≈ 19.6%.

Pot odds: you must call $10 to win $50 ($40 + $10). Price = 10/50 = 20%. You need about 20% equity if this is the last money and you will not win extra on the river.

19.6% versus 20% is a thin fold if you will not get paid extra and if you sometimes lose when a fourth flush card also pairs the board or makes them a boat. The tip is not “never draw”. The tip is: do the fraction before you click. Calling because the flush “is due” is not a tip. It is a mood.

If the bet were $5 into $40, the price is 5/45 ≈ 11%, and the same draw is an easy call on odds alone. Size changed the answer. That is the whole lesson.

Tilt

The most expensive minute is the one after a bad beat. Stand up. A “quick double” to settle your nerves is how a $60 session becomes $180. If you cannot stand up, you do not need a new chart. You need a stop.

Rake

A tip that says “play more hands to get in rhythm” at a high-rake micro table is often just extra tax. Read the fee. If the cap is steep, play fewer pots, not more. Crypto poker explains how rooms charge.

Bankroll is a tip

If one buy-in is 20% of what you can lose this month, you are too deep in this stake. Poker bankroll management and a gambling budget are the same idea at two scales: grind roll versus entertainment cap. Use one of them. Use both if you sit regularly.

Notes that help, notes that do not

Write what *you* did: limped, chased, reloaded, sat a second table. Do not write a novel about their soul. A useful note is “folds to flop c-bets”. An unuseful note is “idiot”. The first changes your next bet. The second changes your blood pressure.

Review one session a week, not every hand the night you lost. Tired review invents leaks that were coolers and misses leaks that were extra calls. Wait until you can read the hand without the soundtrack. Then ask only: did I have a reason for the chips I put in after the flop? If no, that is the tip for next time. If yes, leave it alone. Not every downswing needs a new personality.

If you use a HUD later, treat stats as samples. Twenty hands is not a VPIP. Two hundred is a hint. Two thousand is a picture. Tips that say “exploit 14/12 nits” assume you have a sample. On night five you do not. Play the boring default until the sample exists.

“Play tight on the button” does not apply to video poker. That is a house paytable. “Fold junk” does not apply to Purple on this site’s wheel. Different products.

If you want a verifiable one-shot after you close the poker client, check fairness on a PvP round. That check will not improve your Hold'em. It will confirm a different game was not swapped after you joined.

Timing tells and other folklore

People sell “he tanked, so he is weak”. Sometimes. Sometimes he is looking up a chart. Sometimes the dog walked in. Online timing is a weak signal dressed as a tip. Do not build a river call on a delay. Build it on the price, the board, and the range you gave them. If you need a timing tell to justify the call, you already wanted to call.

Live, physical tells exist and are overrated for the same reason: you will invent the story that matches the chips you want to put in. The cheap tip is still the fraction and the seat. Save theatre for after you can fold ace-high without a speech.

Table selection as a tip

If three seats are arguing in chat and stacking off every orbit, that can be a good table — or a table of better players pretending to be drunk. Sit for one orbit before you decide. If you are the third-best player in the first two minutes, you are not hunting. You are content. Leave. Finding a softer game is a tip that pays more than a new c-bet size.

The same tip applies to hour of day. A Tuesday morning micro table can be a different population from Friday night. You do not need a conspiracy. You need to notice whether people are limping junk or three-betting every open. Play fewer hands in the second room. That is still a tip, not a system.

Poker tips that hold up: tighter early, raise-or-fold preflop, price your calls, plan the street, cap the night, name the rake. They will not make you a winner. They will make you a cheaper customer if you are going to sit anyway.
