Straddle poker: a voluntary blind that acts last before the flop
Straddle poker, in live cash, is a voluntary extra blind. The usual version is under the gun, for twice the big blind, and that player acts last before the flop. After the flop they return to an early seat. It is a house custom, not a law of Hold'em. It is not a required rule on PVPspinArena tables.

An extra blind you choose, usually from under the gun
A straddle is a blind you post before you see cards, on top of the small blind and the big blind. In the live cash custom most people mean, the player under the gun posts two big blinds.
At $1/$2 that post is $4. At $0.50/$1 it is $2.
The multiple can differ. Ask.
Action before the flop starts to the left of the straddler. Players may fold, call the straddle, or raise.
When action returns, the straddler may check or raise. That last look is the privilege they paid for.
The privilege expires when the flop appears. The straddler is now early to act for the rest of the hand. They bought one street of position and rented the worst seat for the other three.
Texas Hold'em rules still run the hand. A straddle does not add community cards, change rankings, or make a new game.
Cash game poker is the format where this custom shows up. Tournaments rarely use it unless the director wrote it in.
Announce the seat and the price before any card moves. At a $1/$2 table, "under the gun, four dollars, last to act before the flop" is a full sentence.
A mumble plus a stack of chips that might be a call is how the pot gets rebuilt. The host repeats the price so the next player knows what "call" costs.
Looking at a hand you hate does not erase the option. When action returns you may check.
Raising with a hand you would have folded from early position is a second leak piled on the chips you already posted. The posted chips are the cost.
They are not a debt that forces a raise.
Some rooms allow the extra blind only from the button, and some allow it from any seat. Those are different customs wearing one name. If the answer to "who may post" is a shrug, do not be the person who invents it.
Straddle poker rules the table must say out loud
Straddle poker rules
Agree on four things. Who may straddle.
How much they post. Whether they act last preflop.
Whether a second player may restraddle for a larger amount. If any answer is missing, do not invent it mid-hand.
A Mississippi straddle, sometimes posted from the button, is a different custom. The button keeps position after the flop, so the tax is smaller than an under-the-gun straddle.
A double straddle, posted by the next player for still more, inflates the price again. Both are live habits.
Neither is required for Hold'em to be Hold'em.
| Question | Usual UTG straddle | Button straddle | Required on our tables |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who posts | first to act preflop | the button | nobody |
| Typical size | two big blinds | a house choice, not published as one number | not used as a requirement |
| Last to act preflop | yes, in the common custom | yes, if the house says so | not a required rule |
| Position after the flop | early | late | ordinary six-max seats |
| May you decline | yes | yes | there is nothing to decline |
The poker topic is the shelf for blinds, positions, and cash-game language. Read it before you treat a straddle as mandatory etiquette.
A custom post versus a fee this site actually charges
The straddle is not a rake. It is a player's own chips, and the winner of the pot can win them back.
A card room may also rake the pot. That rake is not published here.
A house-banked casino game does not need a straddle at all, and any edge on a house game is not published here.
PVPspinArena poker is six-max No-Limit Hold'em. A straddle is not a required rule on our tables.
Do not sit down expecting a straddle button, a Mississippi option, or a double straddle. The fee we do charge is 5% of the pot only after a flop.
We do not list a promo code tied to straddles.

When the straddle taxes the straddler, in dollars
Dollar example 1, a home $1/$2 cash game with no rake written on the card. You are under the gun and you straddle to $4.
The small blind and big blind fold. Four players call $4, and you are already in for $4.
Five players take a flop on a $20 pot. You hold a weak offsuit hand you would have folded from under the gun.
That $4 is the tax. You paid it for the right to act last once, then you act first on every later street from a hand you did not want.
If instead everyone folds to your $4, you take the $1 small blind and the $2 big blind. Your $4 returns.
You win $3 without a flop. That is the upside people remember.
It is less common once callers see a bigger pot offering a better price.
Dollar example 2, our Hold'em, with no straddle required. A pot reaches $16 and sees a flop.
The fee is 5% of $16, so $0.80. The winner receives $15.20.
A hand that ends before the flop pays $0. Do not add a $4 straddle to that example.
Pot odds is where the callers' price belongs. This page does not rebuild the fraction.
Straddle poker tips before you toss the extra blind
Straddle poker tips
- Ask whether a straddle is even allowed tonight.
- Confirm the amount, usually two big blinds, before you post.
- Confirm you act last only before the flop.
- Skip the straddle with a short stack that cannot use the extra dead money.
- Skip it when you are tired and will call the raise just because you already posted.
- Announce "straddle" clearly so the dealer knows the price to call.
- Do not straddle and then complain that the pot is large.
- Treat a button straddle as a different custom with different position.
- Refuse a double straddle you did not hear explained.
- Track how often you win the blinds unopened versus how often you pay off a raise.
- Remember our tables do not require this post.
Poker bankroll management gets louder when every pot starts bigger. A straddle habit is a stake increase you chose.
Dead money, bigger pots, and a tilted early seat
Straddle poker strategy
Straddle poker strategy is a seat problem. Last action preflop lets you raise when the field is weak and check when you hate your cards.
That is real. It does not refund the times you called a raise because $4 was already in the middle.
Sunk chips are not a hand.
The tax is sharpest with hands that cannot continue and cannot take the pot away. You posted from under the gun, three players called, and you are looking at a rag offsuit.
Folding feels wasteful. Calling is how the straddle becomes a fee you pay the rest of the table.
The profitable version, if it exists at your table, is stealing the blinds often enough to pay for the posts you surrender. Most casual straddles do not do that math.
Larger pots also pull worse hands in, because the price to call looks smaller next to the bloated middle. You face more multiway flops from out of position. That is the opposite of the "I have control" story.
A double straddle multiplies the same leak. You are now in for four big blinds, or whatever the table shouted, before you look. If the amount was unclear, the argument will be more expensive than the hand.
A custom among adults, not a rule you must post
Only adults should play for the larger pots a straddle creates. If the age where you live is higher than 18, use that age.
This is not legal advice. A live cash custom does not override local law about home games or card rooms.
You may decline a straddle in any game that calls it voluntary. A table that bullies you for folding the option is a table you can leave. Nothing in Hold'em requires the post.
Read the responsible gambling page before a "just for fun" straddle becomes every hand. The pot grows before anyone has equity they chose. That is a fast way to play bigger than the buy-in you planned.
Our six-max tables do not list a straddle as a required rule. Practise ordinary Hold'em decisions there if you want a public game with a published fee. Do not expect the custom to travel with you.
Six-max Hold'em here leaves the extra blind at home
How PvP compares: a straddle is live-cash furniture. Poker is six-max No-Limit Hold'em without that furniture as a requirement.
Fairness is the seed check after a hand. A live block, when one is present, updates from settled play.
This page does not quote a recent straddle pot from anywhere.
You can practise Hold'em concepts in that lobby: position, bet size, and folding a weak hand. You cannot demand a straddle, and the site does not deal Big O, short deck, razz, 2-7, or open-face Chinese.
Post the extra blind only when the table's card allows it and you can name the tax. Otherwise let the big blind be the last forced bet.
Posting the extra blind does not tell you your equity. A hand-versus-range calculator is the tool people open next, and it still is not pot odds.
