How to win at poker: skill, rake and variance — not a promise

Search results for how to win at poker are full of thumbnails that imply a wage. Treat those as ads. A win, in a serious sense, is a positive expected amount per 100 hands after rake, measured over tens of thousands of hands, against a field you can actually beat.

This poker guide is for adults 18+. It will not tell you that you will make money. It will tell you what would have to be true for money to show up in the mean, and why the mean is not tonight.

Two clocks people confuse

A session clock answers “did I leave ahead tonight?” That clock is noisy. A career clock answers “after rake, over a large sample, versus these fields, is the mean up?” Only the second clock is what “winning at poker” can honestly mean. Marketing uses the first clock: a smiling stack after a cooler. Accounting uses the second. If you only keep the first, you will remember the wins and forget the fees.

You are allowed to play for the first clock as entertainment. Say that out loud. Do not relabel it as a plan to get paid. Entertainment still needs a cap. A cap is not pessimism. It is how you keep the first clock from writing cheques the second clock will never honour.

Hold'em is incomplete information. Better players choose better spots: fewer junk hands out of position, better sizes, fewer panic calls. That can produce a positive expected value versus weaker opponents. It is not the same as beating a house game.

What skill is not

• It is not a martingale on the river.
• It is not playing more tables until the graph goes up.

What skill is

It is a leak list you can name. Position. Starting-hand discipline. Folding when pot odds do not pay. Not tilting off a second buy-in. Poker tips and Texas holdem strategy are the how. This page is the scoreboard maths.

Expected value is the language: each call has a mean. Your session is the sum of those means plus a wide error term.

Game selection is skill

Choosing where to sit is part of the edge, not a footnote. A competent player in a tough, high-rake pool can be a losing product. A messy player in a loose home game can show a plus week. That does not make the messy player a theorist. It means the field was the variable. If every seat at your stake is a regular with notes on you, you are homework. Move down, change hours, or admit you are paying for practice.

Selection also means skipping tables that look “action” because three stacks are already in every pot — if those stacks belong to better players. Action is not a synonym for profitable. Action is a synonym for money in the middle. Who owns that money matters.

The room takes a slice. If your edge versus the field is smaller than that slice, you are a customer, not a winner, even if you play “better than average” in some vague sense.

Figures are teaching labels, not a quote from a named room. Online micro-stakes rake is often heavy relative to the skill gap between seats. That is why “I studied a chart” does not imply a plus graph.

Player B is the uncomfortable row. They *are* better than the field before fees and still lose after fees. That is not a moral failure. It is a product that does not pay. The fix is a better fee, a weaker field, or treating the hobby as paid entertainment. The fix is not a louder study schedule on the same table. Study does not refund the cap.

House edge is the cousin idea for casino games: a posted percentage of turnover. Rake is a tax on pots. Both are costs. Crypto poker walks how rooms collect that tax.

This is the only numeric example on this page.

You play $1/$2 no-limit. A big blind is $2. You believe you are a 4 bb/100 player before rake — $8 per 100 hands, before fees. You play 400 hands in a weekend.

1. Pre-rake expected win ≈ 4 × 4 × $2 = $32. (4 bb/100 × 4 hundreds × $2.)
2. Suppose effective rake is 8 bb/100. That is $16 per 100 hands, $64 over 400 hands.
3. After-rake expectation ≈ $32 − $64 = −$32.
4. Variance around that mean is large. Finishing +$200 or −$400 is ordinary. Neither result proves the 4 bb/100 guess.

The lesson is not “never play”. The lesson is: a modest skill edge at a high-rake stake is a losing product. Move tables, drop rake, or treat the session as paid entertainment with a gambling budget. Do not treat the $32 headline as income.

If your honest pre-rake guess is “I don’t know”, do not invent 8 bb/100 because a video said winners think big. Use zero or negative until a large sample says otherwise. Planning a life on an unmeasured rate is how people quit their job for a micro-stakes graph. The graph was a weekend. The job was the roll.

Poker win rates are small relative to the swing of all-in pots. A 2 bb/100 winner still has downswings measured in tens of buy-ins. That is the shape of the game, not evidence the deck is haunted.

What a short sample can lie about

• A winning weekend with terrible play (you ran well).
• A losing month with decent play (you ran badly, or the rake is too high).
• A new “system” that is just a hotter week.

What you can control

Stakes relative to poker bankroll management. Game selection. Hours. Stop rules. You cannot control the next river. You cannot control whether a worse player calls and sucks out. You can control whether that suck-out is 2% of a roll or 40%.

If you are using a loss as a reason to double the next sit-down, you have left “win rate” and entered chase. That is not strategy.

What a downswing is allowed to teach

A downswing can teach you that your roll was short, that this stake’s rake is too high, or that a leak you ignored is expensive. It cannot teach you that the next hand is due. It cannot teach you that a new colour-coded system will repair the graph. The honest response is smaller stakes or a pause, not a larger buy-in “to get it back in one pot”.

Professionals who last do the boring thing: they drop down. Amateurs treat a drop as shame. Shame is not a bb/100. It is how people jump to a stake their roll cannot survive and then call the bust “variance”. Some of it was variance. Some of it was pride.

Any product that promises you will win at poker if you buy a chart, a bot, or a colour-coded progression is selling hope. Solvers describe equilibrium frequencies; they do not print money at $1/$2 against people who also watched a video. GTO poker strategy is a vocabulary, not a salary.

House games that wear the word poker — video poker, Three Card Poker — are minus-EV paytables. “Winning” there means a lucky session on a negative mean. Do not mix those with Hold'em skill.

On this site, “winning a round” is a hashed result you can check on fairness. It is still not a Hold'em win rate. It is a pot.

Live versus online, briefly

Live, you see fewer hands and pay more of your hour to the blinds. Online, you see more hands and often more rake per hour at micros. Neither venue “wins more”. They change the sample speed and the fee drag. A live 5bb/100 can be a fine night in dollars per hour because you only saw 30 hands. The same rate online is a tiny dollar figure until volume shows up — and volume multiplies rake. Do the units: bb/100, dollars per hour, and rake per hour. If you only track the first, you will call a high-rake grind a win because the graph ticked up before fees felt real.

None of that is a reason to hide deposits. If the honest units make you sick, the answer is not a new unit. The answer is a smaller game or a stop.
