Wagr review: a challenge aimed at a friend, not at a book
Wagr was built as a social sports app: you challenged a friend or someone in the community, both sides put money up, and the operator was not supposed to be the opponent. Yahoo announced on April 25, 2023 that it had acquired Wagr and would fold it into Yahoo Sports. A Wagr review in 2026 explains that friend-challenge model and tells you to read whatever screen still uses the name, because an acquisition moves a product. Adults 18+ only. Not legal advice, and not a promo code.

What the Wagr app was built to do
The Wagr app, in the form Yahoo described when it bought the company, was a peer sports product with a social skin. You picked a side, set an amount, and sent the challenge to a person or into a community feed. The other person took it or left it. The company's public line was that it was not the house. Yahoo's April 25, 2023 announcement said the acquisition had closed and that Wagr would be fully integrated into Yahoo Sports. Integration means the standalone app from that press release is not a safe assumption in 2026.
So this review does two jobs. It explains the challenge model, which is still the thing people mean when they search the name. It also refuses to pretend a 2022 screenshot is a live cashier. If you open a product that uses the name today, the rules on that screen win, including whether the product is still a sports challenge at all. Names get reused. Acquisitions move teams. Adults 18+ only. This is not legal advice about whether a current app is the same licensee.
Friend betting as a general habit, including the ways it goes wrong without an app, is in betting with friends online. A wider look at small wagering apps is in what a wager app is. The cluster home is Sports betting guides. Friend-pool neighbors are the Splash Sports review and fantasy football payouts. This page does not list promo codes for Wagr or for Yahoo.
Both sides of a challenge have to be posted first
The useful part of a friend challenge, when an app actually holds the money, is that nobody chases a Venmo payment on Monday. Each person funds a stake before the game. The winner is paid from that pair of stakes. The loser cannot "forget." That is a custody feature. It is not a promise that the price was fair, and it is not a promise about how fast a later withdrawal leaves the app. This article will not invent a payout time.
The price still needs a look. A challenge on a point spread is a sports bet with a face you know. If the app sets the number and you only choose a side, you are accepting the app's line even though your friend is the counterparty. If you and your friend set the number yourselves, you own the bad price too. Either way, write down the side, the spread or the total, and the stake. A social feed full of other people's bets is entertainment. It is not a price.
Suppose you and one friend each post $50 on opposite sides. The pot is $100. Suppose the confirm screen keeps $8 and pays the winner $92. The $8 is an illustration of take, not a Wagr fee from 2023 or from today. Read it on the entry if a challenge screen still exists. If the screen keeps nothing extra, the winner receives the whole $100, and you should still be able to point at the line that says so. This page will not declare that the fee is nothing, because a motto is not a schedule.
A challenge that only one person has funded is not a bet yet. It is an invitation. Cancel it if the news changes. An open invitation is how people discover, after kickoff, that they were never live.
A six-person Suppose pot, separate from the head-to-head
Head-to-head is easy: two stakes, one winner. Groups need a prize table. The arithmetic is still take equals entries minus prizes.
Suppose six friends each put $15 into a week-long challenge. Entries are $90. The rules pay $60 to first and $18 to second. Prizes are $78. Take is $90 minus $78, which is $12. Twelve dollars is the operator's or the commissioner's cut in this story only. It is not a published Wagr charge, and it is not a fee from Yahoo. If your real group shows different prizes, redo the subtraction. If the rules pay the whole $90 to the players, the prize lines have to sum to $90. You should see that sum on the rules page, not assume it from a slogan.
| Suppose story | Entries | Prizes | Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two people, $50 each, $8 illustration charge | $100 | $92 to the winner | $8 in the example only |
| Six people, $15 each | $90 | $60 plus $18 | $12, which is entries minus prizes |
The first row is a head-to-head with a made-up charge so you can practice reading a confirm line. The second row is a pool. Neither row is a live user count. If the product in your hand has no challenge button, both rows stay in the notebook.
A group that pays the organizer "a little something" off to the side will not show that something in the prize table. Ask for it in writing on the same page as the prizes. A verbal skim is how a $12 take becomes a $30 take without anyone updating the math.
Checklist before you send a challenge
Do this on the current app, not on a 2023 announcement.
- Confirm the product is still a sports challenge. An acquisition can change the screen.
- Name the friend or the username on the other side.
- Write the side, the number, and both stakes.
- Read the fee on the confirm screen. If there is no challenge screen, stop.
- For a group, compute take as entries minus prizes.
- Let the app accept or refuse your state. This page has no list.
- Check the age rule in the app. Eighteen is only the floor for this guide.
- Skip promo codes. None are printed here.
- Only challenge with money you can lose, and only with people you can still speak to if you win.
Responsible gambling matters more in a friend group than in a faceless book, because the pressure is social. A challenge you cannot afford is still a loss if the side misses. The feed will not refund it.
Who is on the other side of the money
A friend challenge and a house game should not share a sentence without a table.
| Who you play | What the operator keeps | What you can verify | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wagr-style challenge | The friend or user who accepted | Read it on the entry | The confirm screen, if the product still offers one |
| Jackpot and Coinflip | Other entrants in that pot | 5% of the pot at settlement, so the winner receives 95% | A committed seed on the fairness page |
| Roulette | The house-banked wheel | About 7.88% theoretical on Purple or Silver after 5% of each winning payout | 33 slots: 16 Purple and 16 Silver pay 2x, 1 Green pays 14x |
| P2P Slott | One other player | 10% of the players' pot when a player wins; a bomb keeps both stakes | The committed seed and whether a bomb ended the match |
The 5%, 10%, and 7.88% figures are this site's published math. They are not a back-filled Wagr commission. The Purple or Silver edge is theoretical, after 5% of each winning payout on the wheel. How a cut is calculated shows the general method. Daily fantasy strategy is the neighboring world Yahoo already lived in, where a field and a prize table replace a single friend.
If the only Wagr you can find is a paragraph in a 2023 press release, the first row has no ticket. The other rows still have games, with rules written down in advance.
Coinflip is two players and a draw, with no game to argue
A Wagr-style challenge still needs a sport. Someone has to win the game, the stat has to be graded, and friends can argue the settlement source. Coinflip skips the sport. Two players fund a pot. A committed draw picks a side. The winner receives 95% because 5% is kept at settlement. There is no spread to dispute.
Balances are US dollars, funded with Bitcoin or with USDC or ETH on Base. After the round, the seed is public and you recompute it on fairness. That check is about the draw. It does not settle a football prop, and a social sports app does not publish that seed.
Jackpot is the same 5% rule with a crowd and tickets. Roulette is the 33-slot wheel in the table. Slott is the 1v1 that keeps 10% when a player wins, unless a bomb ends it and the house keeps both stakes. PVPspinArena does not operate the Wagr app and does not know whether Yahoo still shows a challenge button. If you wanted a friend and a game, use whatever current product actually offers that, and read its ticket. If you wanted two stakes and a draw, the on-site product is Coinflip.
Open Coinflip for that two-player pot: the live activity block, when present, is fetched from settled rounds, not typed into the article.

A feed can show the crowd without improving the number
Social sports products add a feed, a crew, and a leaderboard. Those pieces change the feeling. They do not change the settlement. The game still happens. One side still wins. The pot still pays according to the rules you confirmed. A leaderboard that resets each week is a separate contest with its own prize table, and that table can hide a take the head-to-head challenge did not have. Read them separately.
Public challenges are how strangers enter the same product. You are no longer betting a roommate. You are betting a username. The custody feature still matters, because a stranger is worse at paying up than a friend. The information feature gets worse, because you know less about why they want that side. Fade a loud ticket only when you have a reason that survives without the avatar.
NFL betting is the sport-specific version of reading a side, a spread, and a total. Use it if the challenge is a football game. Do not use a leaderboard rank as a handicap. Last week's winner is not a number.
Yahoo's announcement framed the deal as a way to put group play next to a large fantasy audience. That is a distribution story. It does not tell you whether a challenge button still exists inside Yahoo Sports, what it costs, or which states it accepts. Open the product. If the button is gone, the review of the old app is history, and history does not take deposits.
