Short deck poker pulls the 2s through 5s out of the deck

Short deck poker, also called six-plus Hold'em, uses a 36-card deck. The usual cut removes every 2, 3, 4, and 5, leaving 6 through ace. You still get two hole cards and five community cards. In the common Hong Kong rule a flush beats a full house. Some rooms flip that order. Trips and straights show up more often. PVPspinArena does not deal this game.

Thirty-six cards, and the same two hole cards

Short deck poker starts by taking a deck apart. Pull the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s.

Sixteen cards leave. Thirty-six remain, six through ace, four suits.

Shuffle what is left. Deal two hole cards to each player and five community cards in the usual Hold'em rhythm.

You may use any zero, one, or two of your hole cards, the same way you may in ordinary Hold'em. Nothing in the short deck forces an Omaha-style "exactly two." If a room deals a different short-deck game, its card should say so. This page describes the Hold'em-shaped version.

Because so many small cards are gone, hands connect. Straights need a shorter ladder.

Sets and full houses appear often enough that a "big" hand is less of a shock. That frequency is the point of the variant, and it is also why some rooms reorder a couple of rankings.

Texas Hold'em rules are the parent game. Read them for betting order. Then come back for the missing ranks and the flush question.

Pull the sixteen cards into a pile the table can see. Four suits of 2, 3, 4, and 5 go into the box.

Count what remains. Thirty-six is the whole deck.

One leftover red three will create a straight half the table refuses to honor.

The button still matters. Action order is whatever your card says, and it matters more when made hands collide. Skipping the button because the deck feels novel just adds a second argument to the flush argument.

When the group wants ordinary Hold'em again, put the sixteen cards back and count to 52. Say out loud that a full house beats a flush once more. The Hong Kong order should not follow you into a full deck by habit.

Short deck poker rules, including the Hong Kong flush

Short deck poker rules

In the common Hong Kong rule, a flush beats a full house. The reduced deck makes full houses easier and flushes harder, and that room's order follows the new difficulty.

Some rooms flip that order and keep a full house ahead of a flush, matching the game you already know. Ask before you stack off with a boat.

Losing to a flush you thought was behind you is an expensive way to learn the card.

Straights change shape. Ace can still play high or low.

The low straight is ace-6-7-8-9, because 2 through 5 are not in the deck. Ace-king-queen-jack-ten is still the high straight.

Trips and straights are more common than in a 52-card game. This page does not claim that trips outrank a straight.

Many cards keep the straight ahead of trips. Confirm that line too.

The poker topic is where full-deck rankings and Omaha live. Do not import a short-deck flush into those games.

A variant we do not deal, next to a Hold'em fee we do

Rooms that spread short deck publish their own rake, ante, or button blind. Those amounts are not one global number, so they are not published here. A house-banked casino product is a different bet against the house, and its edge is not published here.

PVPspinArena does not deal short deck poker. The poker page is six-max No-Limit Hold'em with the ordinary deck.

The Hold'em charge here is 5%, and only after a flop is dealt. We do not list a promo code for a short-deck site, and we are not that site's affiliate.

Crypto poker describes the Hold'em fee in the room we actually run. Use it for the game in the lobby, not for a 36-card variant.

A kitchen 36-card pot and a full-deck flop fee

Dollar example 1, friends dealing short deck at $0.50/$1. They removed 2 through 5 and wrote that the house takes nothing.

They also wrote that they are using the common Hong Kong rule, so a flush beats a full house. The pot on the river is $64.

The flush wins and drags $64. If the group had flipped the order, the full house would drag the same $64.

The dollars did not decide the ranking. The card did.

Dollar example 2, full-deck Hold'em on this site. A six-max pot reaches $100 and sees a flop.

The fee is 5% of $100, so $5. The winner receives $95.

Short-deck rankings do not apply to that pot. A hand that never sees a flop pays no poker fee.

Do not skim $5 from the friends' $64.

Pot odds still prices a call, but the outs change when the deck is short and when a flush outranks a boat. Recompute outs only after you know which order the room uses.

Short deck poker tips before you pull cards out

Short deck poker tips

  • Count the deck. You want 36 cards, not 32 and not 40.
  • Confirm 2, 3, 4, and 5 are the ranks in the box, not a random discard.
  • Ask whether a flush beats a full house tonight.
  • Ask what the low straight is. Expect ace-6-7-8-9 unless the card says otherwise.
  • Ask whether trips stay behind straights.
  • Ask how blinds or antes work. There is no single published structure here.
  • Announce the order to the whole table before the first button.
  • Do not stack off with a full house until the flush question is answered.
  • Track that big hands collide more often than in full-deck Hold'em.
  • Keep a second deck intact so you can switch back without a missing 4.
  • Stop if the count drifts during a break.

Omaha poker rules are a different way to add more made hands. Do not mix a five-card Omaha deal into a 36-card Hold'em deck.

The flipped boat, and hands that look safer than they are

Short deck poker strategy

Short deck poker strategy starts with the ranking card, not with a slogan about action. If you play a full house as the nuts on a two-flush board, and the room uses the common Hong Kong rule, you are betting a hand that loses to a flush.

If the room flipped the order, the opposite mistake fires. Say the order in a full sentence before the cards come out.

The second risk is treating trips like a full-deck monster. Trips are more common.

So are straights. A set is still strong, and it is less of a surprise when someone else has one too, or has the straight the short deck makes easier.

Bet because the hand is ahead of the ranges you see, not because the word "set" felt rare in ordinary Hold'em.

Blind structure is a third risk. Some games use a button blind and antes.

Some use ordinary blinds. Copying the wrong structure changes every open size.

This page will not assign a dollar ante as if every room shared it.

Stack depth feels shorter when pots swell with made hands. A "standard" call from full-deck memory can commit you.

Poker bankroll management is the cushion. The 36-card deck does not shrink variance.

Put the small cards back if you want the table we run

How PvP compares: short deck is a 36-card Hold'em cousin with a ranking argument you must settle first. Poker deals the 52-card six-max game.

Fairness is the committed-seed check for hands played there. If that page has a live block, the block updates from settled play.

This guide does not reprint a recent short-deck result.

Big O, razz, 2-7, and open-face Chinese are absent too. Say so before someone hunts the lobby for a variant list.

Learn the Hong Kong flush line, learn that some rooms flip it, and keep trips and straights in the "more common" column rather than in a fake ranking. Then play full-deck Hold'em where the fee is 5% only after the flop.

Stripping twos through fives is not a fifth hole card. Five-card Omaha is the other variant people open by mistake.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Start with 52 cards and remove the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s. Thirty-six cards remain, six through ace. Deal two hole cards and five community cards. Streets match Hold'em. Blind and ante amounts are a room choice and are not one published schedule here.

In the common Hong Kong rule, yes, a flush beats a full house. Some rooms flip that order and let the full house win, as in ordinary Hold'em. Ask before you play a pot. Do not assume the room you saw online is the room you are sitting in.

Sixteen cards are gone, so pairs, trips, and connected hands collide more. The low straight is often ace-6-7-8-9. More common does not, by itself, mean trips outrank a straight. Check that ranking on the card.

No. The site deals six-max No-Limit Hold'em with a full deck. Seeing a flop triggers a 5% charge. A $100 pot that sees a flop pays $5, and the winner receives $95. Short deck stays a rules explanation.

With 2 through 5 removed, the low straight in the usual game is ace-6-7-8-9. Ace-king-queen-jack-ten is still the top straight. A room that defines straights differently must write it down. Do not bring a wheel of ace-2-3-4-5 into a deck that has no 2.

Count to 36. Name the flush-versus-full-house order out loud. Name the low straight. Leave antes and button blinds as whatever the card says, not as a number from a different room. Then decide whether you still want the game.
