How to help someone with a gambling addiction: support, not a script

How to help someone with a gambling addiction is mostly practical: talk without a fight script, stop funding losses, protect shared money, and point them to help they can use tonight. You cannot self-exclude for them in most places. You can sit with them while they call 1-800-GAMBLER, lock accounts, and tell the truth. Covering debts so the house stays quiet often makes the next bet easier.

What help looks like from the outside

You are not their clinician and not their parole officer. Help, from a partner, parent or friend, is making the next honest step easier and the next secret deposit harder.

That usually means:

  • A calm conversation that names harm, not a character.
  • An offer to sit with them while they call a helpline or click self-exclude.
  • Changes to shared cards, joint accounts and “can you just send $40.”
  • Your own support, so you are not the only person holding the week.

This how-to is for adults 18+. It sits next to gambling addiction and the gambling hotline page. If they are ready to stop, keep how to stop gambling open. If you are in a situation of immediate danger, use emergency services first. A gambling guide is not a safety plan for violence.

Do not use this article to diagnose them from a list. Point at signs only if it helps you decide to act, not as a courtroom exhibit.

You will not get a clean movie ending. Help is a series of small locks and conversations. Measure whether access got harder and whether you protected your own money. Do not measure whether they thanked you.

Talk without a confrontation script

Scripts that start with “we all sat down to tell you that you are an addict” often end with a slammed door and a new wallet. You do not need theatre. You need one true statement and one offer.

A shape that is usually safer

  1. Pick a time when they are not mid-session and not drunk.
  2. Name a specific fact you can stand behind: a bill, a missing amount, a hidden app — not a theory of their soul.
  3. Say what it is doing to you, in one or two sentences.
  4. Offer a next action you can take together in the next hour: call 1-800-GAMBLER, email support to lock an account, install a blocker.
  5. Stop talking long enough that they can answer.

What to avoid

  • Piling every historical grievance into the same speech.
  • Threatening a consequence you will not carry out.
  • Debating why gambling is addictive as if a lecture will finish the night.
  • Recording them or springing a group “intervention” you copied from video.

If they deny it, you still protect money. Denial is information. It is not a reason to keep a joint card on a casino site.

Illustration: “I saw three deposits Tuesday after you said you were done. I am scared about rent. I will sit with you while you call the helpline or I will move my pay to a solo account this week.” That is support plus a boundary. It is not a monologue.

If they want to debate why gambling is addictive, you can say “we can read that after the call.” Theory is a stall when the cashier is still open.

Support that does not fund the next bet

Enabling, in this context, means reducing the cost of the last session so the next session is easier. It is often done with love.

Common versions:

  • Paying the bookie, the credit card, or the “short-term” crypto loan.
  • Lending cash with a story about groceries that you both know is thin.
  • Calling in sick for them so they can play or recover from a night.
  • Lying to family so they do not have to face the number.
  • Letting them use your identity or your cards.

None of those is the same as paying a shared utility so the lights stay on while you change the account structure. Lights and food for children are not deposits. The line is whether the money can become a stake.

If you have already covered losses, you do not need to punish yourself. Change the rule going forward. Say the rule out loud once. Repeat it when you are asked again.

A gambling budget is for someone who still chooses to play. If they cannot choose, do not help them design a “safer” bankroll. Help them toward zero access.

Do not become their bookie by holding cash “so they can play a small amount.” That is funding with extra steps. If they are still choosing to play, they can run their own budget. If they are not, the amount is zero.

Shared money, cards and crypto

Protecting yourself is part of helping. A broke household does not make recovery easier.

  • Move your pay to an account they cannot drain, if that is legal and safe for you to do.
  • Remove your cards from gambling sites and shared browsers.
  • Change passwords on joint banking and turn on alerts.
  • If they gamble with crypto, do not store their seed phrase “for them” in a way that lets them demand it mid-urge — and never type a seed into a help-desk site. See seed phrase for the security side, not as a hiding tutorial.
  • Do not become their unlicensed debt manager if the numbers need a free non-profit adviser instead.

State self-exclusion lists are usually first-person. A few places have limited third-party routes through a regulator or court. Check your regulator; do not assume you can enrol them from this page.

On PVPspinArena, they must request a lock themselves or through their own support contact. You can sit with them. You cannot impersonate them. The responsible gambling page is the site list to open together.

If you control a shared router, category blocks are a household tool, not a secret punishment, if you say you are doing them. Surprise blocks on a device that is not yours can explode into a fight and a new phone. Prefer transparency plus your own account changes.

Point them to help they can use tonight

Have three tabs ready, not a speech.

  1. 1-800-GAMBLER / [ncpgambling.org](https://www.ncpgambling.org/) — a person. Helplines also take your call if they refuse.
  2. Stop plan — how to stop gambling.
  3. Locks — gambling self-exclusion.

You can offer to stay in the room. You cannot complete the call for them if they leave. If they want treatment language, keep it high-level: counselling, CBT, GA, tools. Do not pick a rehab from an ad and demand they pack.

If they are not ready, you still use the money steps. Readiness is not the gate for your boundary.

Keep 1-800-GAMBLER and [ncpgambling.org](https://www.ncpgambling.org/) in your own phone too. You may need the family door on a week they will not call.

Look after yourself on purpose

Living with hidden betting is exhausting. You are allowed to get your own help — Gam-Anon, a counsellor, a helpline — without waiting for them to “go first.”

Sleep, work and your other relationships will need attention. You are not required to monitor a phone like a full-time job. Monitoring can become its own harm.

If the situation includes threats, stalking of accounts, or violence, that is beyond this guide. Use local emergency or domestic-abuse services. We will not improvise safety tactics here.

You are allowed to leave a conversation that is going nowhere. Help is not a hostage situation in the kitchen. End the talk, keep the money rule, sleep if you can.

If they are not ready

Some people will thank you and lock the apps. Some will joke. Some will get angry. Your job is not to win the hour.

Keep the offer on the table: you will sit with them for a helpline call. Keep the money rule. Do not escalate into a nightly trial. Do not bargain “one more weekend if you promise.” Promises are cheap; access is the variable that matters.

If they later ask for help, skip the recap of every lie. Go back to the three tabs. Shame recaps are how people walk out of the room and open a new site.

For your own definition of the pattern, what is gambling addiction is enough. You do not need them to accept the word before you change the cards.

If they later slip, skip the “I told you so” recap. Return to the three tabs. A recap is how people walk out and open a new brand. The lock and the person are still the job.

The two pages to open with them

How to help someone with a gambling addiction is support plus boundaries: talk without a script, stop funding the loop, protect shared money, and sit with them while they use real help.

When they are willing to act, the pair that matters is how to stop gambling and gambling self-exclusion. Our Responsible play guides include the hotline and treatment map. You cannot do those pages for them. You can make sure the next step is a lock and a person, not another loan.

If you remember one boundary: money that can become a stake is not support. Lights, food, and a ride to a meeting can be. A cash transfer “to get through the week” usually is not. Repeat the line when you are asked again. You do not owe a new debate each time. Helplines will back you up on that distinction if you need to hear it from someone who is not in the house.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Name one specific harm, offer to sit with them while they call 1-800-GAMBLER or self-exclude, and protect shared money. Skip a confrontation script. Do not hand over cash that can be deposited. One concrete hour beats a long speech.

Paying a loss so the problem stays hidden often funds the next bet. Paying a shared essential bill while you change account access is different. Use a free debt adviser if the numbers are large.

Usually no. Most schemes require the gambler to enrol. A few jurisdictions have limited third-party routes. Check your regulator. You can still install blockers on shared devices you control.

Keep your money boundary. Keep the offer of a helpline call. Do not run nightly trials. Denial does not require you to leave a joint card on a casino site.

In the US, 1-800-GAMBLER and ncpgambling.org support family as well as gamblers. Peer groups for families also exist. This page is not a substitute for those services.

A surprise group confrontation often increases secrecy. A calm, specific conversation plus a concrete action in the same hour is usually safer. If the situation is unsafe, use emergency or specialist services.
